What is the difference between linking and embedding media in a lesson?

The Insert/Media dialogue gives you the option to insert a media file as a linked file or as an inline player (thus embedding the file).

With a linked audio file, you click on the link for the file, which appears as an audio icon. Then the player for that file (e.g. Windows Media Player) comes up in a separate window. If you click on a linked video file, you may be asked to save the file to your local computer. Then you can play it.

With an embedded file, the player control bar appears within the Web page.

With embedded files, you may encounter a message in Internet Explorer concerning file restrictions on active content. For details, see the FAQ When I try to bring up a page with embedded media in Internet Explorer (IE), I get a message about IE restricting active content. What should I do?
