How can I test my LTI linked SoftChalk Cloud content as a student to confirm the grade will pass to the LMS grade book?

If you are testing out your own graded LTI linked lessons in an LMS to confirm the grade book connectivity, there are a couple of things to be aware of as the Cloud account owner/course instructor:

  • If you are logged into SoftChalk Cloud you will not be able to establish a connection to ScoreCenter.
In order to produce a valid test, you need to ensure that you have logged out of your Cloud account or use an incognito web browser.
Using the SoftChalk Link Selector will automatically log you into your Cloud account.

  • If you are logged in as an Instructor in the course, you will not launch the 'Student' view of the LTI lesson, and it will not connect to ScoreCenter in such a way that it will pass any grades.
Be sure to log in as a test student enrolled into the course or impersonate a student user enrolled into the course.

  • If you are logged into the LMS admin account and attempt to access an LTI link, it will likely fail. LTI is only intended to work with users assigned ‘Instructor/Faculty' or 'Student' roles in an LMS.
Oftentimes an admin is also enrolled into the course as 'admin’, but it is best to test things with a instructor account if possible.

  • If you are logged into SoftChalk Cloud you will not be able to establish a connection to ScoreCenter.
In order to produce a valid test, you need to ensure that you have logged out of your Cloud account or use an incognito web browser.

To test the LMS assignment as a student and confirm the grade has passed to the LMS grade book:

  1. Add your SoftChalk Cloud lesson LTI link to your LMS course using the steps shown in the ‘SoftChalk Cloud Users’ section of the LMS User Guide.

2. Open an incognito web browser tab.

3. Impersonate an enrolled student in your LMS course or log into your course as an enrolled student.

4. Navigate to and click on the SoftChalk assignment in the LMS course.

Students can expect their attempt will be recorded when they see the below screens. With a successfully connected ScoreCenter lesson:

  • Students will see the popup message with instructions to click Finish.

5. Click Continue to access the lesson.

6. Navigate through the lesson. Be sure to click the appropriate Check Answers, Finish (Essay) and/or complete the Activity elements in the lesson.

7. At the last page of the lesson, click the Finish button at the bottom of the page.

  • Students will receive the successfully submitted message after clicking Finish.

Students can also print the Score Receipt containing the assignment name, possible score, and the score received for the attempt.

8. After taking the SoftChalk assignment, log out of the LMS course as a student.

9. Log back into your course in LMS as the instructor and navigate to the SoftChalk linked assignment.

10. Click on the SoftChalk linked assignment. You should see the ScoreCenter containing attempt details for the lesson.

You can read more about ScoreCenter in the LMS User Guide.

11. Confirm the score is visible in the LMS gradebook as well.
