I want to apply a layout to my lesson. How do I apply the layout? How do I know which layout is best for my lesson?

There are 3 Layout options available in SoftChalk. The lesson's Layout and its associated options determine in large part the overall experience of a student when they access a SoftChalk lesson.

  • The Horizontal layout is recommended for content that you intend to be viewed from a desktop computer or other device that uses a similar horizontal aligned screen.

  • The Vertical layout is intended for content that you intend to be viewed from a mobile device or other small screen where a minimalist interface is beneficial.

  • The Classic layout is intended to most closely match the appearance of content built using earlier versions of SoftChalk Create.

The Horizontal Layout includes a header banner that displays the Lesson Title/Subtitle.

The lesson navigation and score also display in a horizontal banner across the page.

The icon to display or collapse the Lesson Sidebar will also appear on the navigation banner.

The previous and next page links show centered, at the bottom of the page.

Finally, there is a footer banner at the bottom of the lesson which will contain the lesson's copyright and other information, along with the print all link

 

The Vertical Layout eliminates the banners from the overall lesson display.

Instead, the Lesson Title/Subtitle and Footer information will be displayed in the lesson's Sidebar.

The lesson score, table of contents and the sidebar content itself will also be placed into the Sidebar.

There are buttons at the top and bottom of the lesson that let a student proceed to the next page or return to a previous one.

When the Sidebar is collapsed, this lesson Layout can present information to student users clearly without any obstructing menus or navigation preventing them from seeing the lesson's content.

 

This Layout option is designed to resemble the appearance options available most closely for content built in SoftChalk Create using the old Lesson Style and ThemeBuilder choices.

The Classic Layout has the additional options of enabling a table of content from the drop-down on the header banner.

It also allows you to enable Page Numbers or Names to display across the header banner.

The arrangement of the other lesson elements closely matches the Horizontal Layout.
